| In June 1947, Edna Spies (1905 – 1988) founded the Scott County Bookmobile. The first bookmobile was a WWII Willys army jeep and was funded entirely by donations. Not long after, the bookmobile organization bought a school bus to travel to 110 schools in 15 rural Scott County townships. It contained 1,500 books and a movie projector and screen.Growing up near Cherokee, Iowa, Spies was not allowed to check out books from the town library because she lived in a rural area. After she became a Scott County school teacher, she saw the same thing happening to rural children in this area, leading her to found the bookmobile organization. |
