Responding to Changing Times
The way people obtain, use, and disseminate information has and is changing drastically in the 21st Century and the Scott County Library System is proudly providing new and improved services because of those changes.
Residents in Scott County are fortunate to have a library system that circulates thousands of print books and audio visual materials each month. But our libraries have also expanded beyond our walls – we have research databases, e-books, and e-audiobooks that can be accessed 24/7 via the Internet.
The number of U.S. adults to own e-readers doubled in 2011 and that number is sure to continue to grow in 2012 according to the Pew Internet Research Center.
Making Existing Services Better
The Scott County Library System belongs to an 84 library e-book and e-audiobook consortium called WILBOR, which provides thousands of downloadable titles through the State Library.
To better serve our Scott County users, we would like to purchase e-books that would only be available to our library card holders.
The Big Picture
Our goal is to create a $10,000 fund from which we can purchase an initial collection of e-books and establish funds for future online collection development to benefit users in Blue Grass, Buffalo, Durant, Eldridge, Princeton, Walcott, and rural Scott County.
We believe this will create opportunities for new ways of learning and reading, now and in the future.
Library edition e-books can be purchased for prices similar to print versions, which range from $5 to $30 dollars each. Any contribution will help us reach our goal of $10,000 for digital literacy.
